I am visibly shocked that I had to drive 500 kilometers away from my beloved city to realize this. Most people speak the term ' Mombasa Raha' but in reality Nairobi people have more fun. Just to put everything in context, it's the middle of the night and I'm sitting on the beach at a 5 star hotel facing the ocean. I am here on business but the last 2 hours have been the most fun I have had in weeks.
So what are the variables that are necessary in the life of Nairobians that are then used to create the aforementioned fun. How about we start with the basic component, money, we labour all day and in some cases all tonight for this money. We have the CEO stuck in his office or up and down in meetings trying yo get it, we have the sales person knocking in doors to try and get and even that girl who is hustling a bunch of guys to raise sine funds. Money has been the driving force in our lives for a very long time and it has been very visible when it comes to the size of the population. Forget the fact that up country has the best air water and probably food availability. People will move in droves to Nairobi with the promise of more money and in their understanding less problems, which was not the case.
The second and most important component is company, I mean that group of friends that sit down and chat over a beer or the ones that hit the road and start club hoping. You do a proper mix if money and company and you have the best sort if fun ever, I know this because I have a bit if both.
Now how do the unmonied people party, well check out the death counter on the illicit brew and you know.
I stated that nairobians have more fun and coast is the most fun. This is primariy because nairobians are a set of hardworking individuals, the ones that I relate myself with anyway, and those that work hard play hard too.
I heard a story today from a friend of a friend that I realized would help in understanding this stuff, the gentleman in question would be fondly known as Mark. Mark was in school in a Nairobi university but one day took a trip to Mombasa. While here he juts fell in love with the place and decided to transfer his credits here. He has thus been here for close to 12 years. Mark is one among many nairobians who after sampling and exhausting what Nairobi has to offer move in for a better and bigger high. This does not necessarily diminish what Nairobi has to offer but clearly describes the hunger that nairobians have for fun.
